What Are Structural Timbers?

Structural timbers are dimensional lumber products typically manufactured in nominal 4x and 6x sizes. These members provide increased cross-sectional area compared to standard framing lumber and are used for posts, beams, girders, and structural supports in residential and light commercial construction.

Surfaced Four Sides (S4S)

The timbers supplied through our lumberyard are surfaced four sides (S4S), providing uniform dimensions and cleaner edges for improved installation, alignment, and finished appearance.

Species Availability

Current inventory includes Douglas Fir and Hem-Fir structural timbers. Species selection may vary based on availability and project requirements.

Douglas Fir is commonly specified for its strength and structural performance, while Hem-Fir is frequently used in structural applications where engineered design values meet project needs.

Common Applications

  • Structural posts and columns
  • Beam and girder applications
  • Deck framing and exterior supports
  • Pergolas and outdoor structures
  • Heavy blocking and structural reinforcement

Structural Considerations

Timbers and posts must be selected based on span, load, and bearing requirements in accordance with engineered plans and applicable building codes. Grade, species, and moisture condition should align with project specifications and local code provisions.
